Northumberland to Scottish Borders

Great example here

You see the difference in location between the "Welcome to Scotland" sign - and the county welcome sign behind it

well this is due to a legal "funny" thing

The official map defining the county boundary is obviously drawn to scale - and the pen used to draw it has a finite thickness

Hence the country starts at one place and the county starts a few yards later - the difference bing the scaled up thickness of the pen used to define the border on the official map!

I know this to be true as it was explained to me by a Geography teacher - so it must be true!!

(having said which - his wife was sitting next to him at the time and she rolled her eyes quite dramatically when he said it - she was also a Geography teacher!!!)

I went through Bedfordshire, Cambridgeshire, Northamptonshire, Rutland and Leicestershire yesterday. Only saw boundary signs for Cambridgeshire, Rutland (twice) and Leicestershire though.
