I was a car dealer around your area in the seventies and eighties, is does not do my head and good to dwell on the cars I should have kept rather than sold.

The 308 GT4 that I sold for £6500 in about 1979 hurts.

That would have been a Classic in the 70's never mind now !!
I once let a 1943 Willys Jeep slip through my fingers about 1978 £750 asking price , I bought a Datsun Sunny van instead ,

Ouch! I paid £800 for an E type and only £1900 for a 1956 RR from a chap in Richmond. I could go on as I bought and sold over 500 a year from 1978 until 1988

I soooo wish I'd not given in to the marital pressures of 'We need a new car'

I met a bloke in Australia , he had a 70's E type , full body sort of one , he kept it under wraps , said it was part of his retirement fund , not daft !!
My dad owned two Somersets , sort of nice in a way , the last one I went to the scrap yard with him to dispose of it , £7.50 they give him !!

lovely old classic car, i love the classics, they have a style and presence that a great many modern cars just cannot achieve

I bet people said that about the aforementioned cars when they were new too

Why do people never learn?

My dad had two Zephyr 4's, and a Zephyr 6 (the Mk. 3 version in each case). Also among the many vehicules he owned were a Triumph GT6 Mk. 2, a Ford Cortina 1600E, a Vincent Black Shadow and, perhaps best of all, a bronze Jaguar Mk. 2 3.4.

He owned some cack as well, like a Hillman Avenger, a Daihatsu van and a Morris Marina coupe (the latter bought with the intention of being my first car, but sold on before I ever got behind the wheel).

The other night I rode down to the local Wickes looking for some suitable bolts to put in my cleats (fool's errand, but I digress) when an old boy came up to me to ask me for bike recommendations as he was thinking about starting riding, about five miles a day initially. He had a spotless red TR6 150Pi which he'd owned for 24 years and which he'd treated to a full body-off restoration (and sorted all the original fuel injection niggles which originally plagued the car). I spent ages talking to him, he had photos of the restoration in the (immaculately veneered) glovebox.

He may be selling it soon. Sadly we need an extension doing.

My Dad was in the trade (mechanic / teacher) from the 40's to the '90's and still has tears in his eyes when he recalls the Rolls Royce he was offered and turned down in 1954 for 2 pounds, 3 shillings and tuppence happ'eny^_^
