That's a carbon monoxide detector isn't it? Not the same thing as a gas leak detector I think.

They'd be useless as a methane detector. They detected carbon monoxide (fire damp) and dangerously high concentrations of nitrogen and carbon dioxide (black damp). The miners depended upon seeing the flame in their Davey lamps burning brighter to detect methane in the air.
