i have recently got my new bike and would like to buy a lock.

i have the Raleigh urban 2 15" frame so it has small frame size.

can anyone recommend a suitable lock for this bike.

budget less than £40

I've had no complaints with this

http://www.chainreactioncycles.com/Models.aspx?ModelID=27019

but I don't use the frame mount, even on around 17", with bottle cages there is little room to mount a lock, it rides in my pannier or on the rack.

For brief locking up if I really can't lug a heavy lock around I have a "bikemate" cable lock with rotating armour that was about £9 from Aldi which coils up double so fits easily in a racktop bag or daysac

there's a thread on LFGSS about locks:-

http://www.lfgss.com/thread17938.html#post563834

they recommend a D/U lock and a tube diameter of no less than 16mm, top of the list is a GRP superdeals lock at £14.50. I'd also recommend combining this with a smaller lock, of the same style, to double up. There're other threads around about the best way to lock up a bike. A quick look on youtube will reveal just how pointless many locks are. Faced with the tools thieves will carry the lifespans are measured in seconds.

Ive got to say mate honestly Halfrauds sell a magnum gold rated dlock for 40 quid and its brilliant I have 2

Which is probably fine though I would always check the thickness of the shackle now. I think it was a, now corrected, model of the New York lock that was embarassingly possible to open with a bic pen.

I'm also led to believe that the Sold Secure ratings, gold/silver/bronze, are highly questionable and only of use if satisfying an insurance company. Apparently their tests do not include mini hydraulic jacks, angle grinders or the huge bolt croppers.

Yes thats true macb I should have said c+ done a review of locks and it scored very highly one of the best on test, the bic biro trick is about 3 years old now and most decent new locks are immune from this trick.

I've got the other Magnum, without the extender, and they are good. Since got a NY Mini Fag lock which is about the best, along with the top Abus D.

The bic thing worked with the cylinder shaped key locks..... no-one uses them now

i have measured the frame and it wasn't very big (but expected as you can tell by looking at it)

i think the magnum will fit on the frame but there will be no room for bottle cage or bottle, if i ever decide to get one.

i think that i would rather have a lock.

i have also ordered the dhb amberley waterproof hi viz jacket.

so i am nearly all set.

get a motorbike lock, it'll be heavier duty and so cheap you can but two and leave one at each end

even cheaper get something from a hardware shop

just because it's a cycle lock they triple the price and lighter means weaker

Hi, there is a site called http://www.easylocks.co.uk they supply many types of bicycle locks http://www.easylocks.co.uk/bicycle-locks-c-111_195.html .

If you just wanted a cheap cable for a quick lock up fo example to go into in the shp then you could buy this http://www.easylocks.co.uk/easylocks-spiral-security-bicycle-cable-bicycle-locks-p-3048.html and use a cheap padlock to go with it http://www.easylocks.co.uk/padlocks-padbars-c-111_149.html I hope this answers your question on bicycle locks. :-)
