I can often see bluetits from my kitchen window, but they've been having a right party this morning. Flying about to and fro like there's no tomorrow. Loads more of them than usual, with some greattits as well (leading to some fights).

Never seen them acting like this before; are there any ornithologists on the forum who might know what's going on?

Is there some food source there? It could be as the autumn sets in and temperatures drop food is harder to come by and they are competing for it?Just a guess.

Yes, that could be it - I've been watching them some more and they seem to be pecking away at something in the walls. It's a sheltered spot away from the wind as well (very windy here today!). There must be lots of insects in this spot - at night the birds are replaced by bats flying around in the same area.
