I've just posted this to my local ride group (and yACF):-
"I'm going to run this again.
Same format as previous years:- ride from Manchester to Ramsbottom on a largely off-road route, lunch at the Chocolate Cafe and then on another largely off-road route to Rawtenstall where we get the East Lancs Railway back to Bury. From Bury we ride back to Manchester.
This year I'm planning to start the ride in front of Old Trafford at 09.15. This should enable us to get to the Chocolate Cafe a little earlier than in previous years and it will either give us more time at Rawtenstall or we could catch the 13.40 train instead of the 15.20.
The route will be the same as last year: MCR Ship Canal, NCN6 to Radcliffe and on to Elton then the climb through Tottington up to Holcombe Brook and Ramsbottom. After Ramsbottom it's along the old railway line from Stubbins to Irwell Vale, up to Haslingden golf club and then on-road to Rawtenstall.
There are two significant hills, a long gradual one up to Holcombe Brook and a short steep one after Irwell Vale.
The terrain is suitable for skinny road tyres although wider ones will be more comfortable. It can get muddy (mainly leaf mulch) but MTBs are overkill.
Last year's outward route (different start to this year):- http://www.strava.com/activities/222039639#5249462299
If you're interested, please let me know."
Total ride distance is about 40 miles so it's maybe not worth travelling far to do it unless you also combine it with a Saturday night in MCR. I can give routes from Manchester stations to either the start or a meeting point en-route. I may even be able to offer feeder rides.
