I have a Dahon MU D8 and being older I changed the chainring to a 46 tooth and it rides and shifts very good, I discovered if I turn the crank backward the chain changes gears - then turning crank forward it goes to the selected gear immediately. It only does this on gears 1 - 2 and 3 from 4 up to 8 doesn't do that. If anyone has any incite into why I would appreciate your sharing. Jan G

Sounds like the derailleur hanger might be bent. Check the alignment of the derailleur to the freehub/cassette from behind. Might be possible to straighten it or buy a replacement which may only be available from Dahon.
