Throughout the summer I have noticed another rider on my route in and out of town. He rides with a backpack full of speakers and plays music at full tilt.

I immediately took a dislike to his attention seeking and selfish attitude.

On Wednesday night, I found myself behind him as I left the office. He was quick, smooth confident, courteous and safe, thanking cars that he held up as he took primary, calling all clear to riders that he was on the outside of as they approached obsticles in their lane.

Most of all, he was fast...not stupid risky fast, but smooth and fluid.

I had to push to keep up,and was mostly drafting him with confidence that he wouldn't do anything unpredictable.

On the biggish hill at the end of my ride I took point and pulled him up (which surprised me as he was on a fixy and I assumed he would have to attack the hill) at the top he stopped and thanked me for the tow, we struck up,a brief chat and then parted ways.

I haven't stopped feeling like a snobbish prick ever since.

Well, that's good cos you were. But good on you for recognising it.
