I meant that if I'd booked in advance I would have a Southern ticket, which they would have to honour whatever happened. If I book a ticket with FCC I would be stuck with having to get their train if this strike gets called off.

Ah - understandable. Looking at the websites, it only shows Thameslink trains, and clicking on the price shows it's only valid on their services. Which is daft as they're both part of Govia. But that's privatisation for you. Doesn't help the actual train user sadly.

I did that in Brighton once. It just got me in to far more trouble (cab driver, falling over, SWMBO) than riding back ever has.

Speaking of which, what pubs are good in the vicinity?

Maybe one, plenty of poor ones. But am prepard to do some research for the good of Fridays peeps. Also might depend on how large you imagine 'vicinity' to be.
However, I do know the breakfast stop serve both brown and yellow versions of rehydration. A fact of which I'm sure you are already aware.
