I want to plant some bushes on my front garden to turn it from a barren wasteland into a lush forest without having to to any hard work or spending much money.

What should I plant?

Yes a bit extreme!

I have a straggled rose bush and some kind of green leafed thing at the moment and a white picket fence.

I planted some flower last year, they died pretty comprehensively

Well, write it down boy ......
Berberis, can get purple leaved and green leaves, can be trimmed to shape or left, I prefer to leave them alone. Prickly as well.
Shrubby honeysuckle, as above trim or leave alone. Not prickly.
Osmanthus, like holly but prettier in the variegated version.
I also would recommend fatsia japonica. It looks very exotic and grows to a fair size but not too quickly.
You've got loads of choice. The ones I mention will grow in pretty much any aspect.
Don't plant leylandii, and go with some advice my mother gave me "don't ever plant anything described as quick growing".
