Constable Phil Barnes said: “The male was cycling on the inside lane of the Ormeau Road citybound at Ormeau Bridge when a vehicle knocked him off his bicycle from behind and drove off.”
The driver didn’t do it, a vehicle did. The person cycling was hit by a driver from behind on a straight two-laned road yet speculation of recklessness is avoided. Constable Barnes would go further and take time to give a victim blaming lecture:
He added: “Cyclists also need to remember they are amongst the most vulnerable road users, so we recommend wearing a helmet, always using front and rear lights, not listening to music players and keeping aware of their surroundings.
A RESPECTED North East vicar died after his bike was clipped by a moving car, an inquest heard. […A] central reservation caused the road to narrow, and Mr Strong’s Skoda car clipped the kerb of the reservation as he tried to pass. His car turned slightly towards Mr Malleson, an experienced cyclist, and lightly clipped his handlebars. The “scuff” prompted Mr Malleson, who was not wearing a cycle helmet, to lose his balance and fall to the ground.
