Depends on your shifter, tiagra and below has adjuster on them, anything above will need one to make setting front mech easier if you haven't got one on your down tube already?
 
I've found I've only really needed the front barrel adjuster on my 10 speed 105 equipped bike (compact up front 12-28 on the back).

@bpsmith No need for a chain stretcher tool. You can position the derailleur (front or rear) and then move to a smaller ring/cog, but without turning the pedals. This then creates sufficient slack in the cable to tension it easily by hand.

Not saying it's a necessity, but I find it so much easier with the tool.
