We have them occasionally if there is an aircraft being escorted into Stansted which is the airport of choice for any suspicious or possible threats.

It's not often but we had one a few weeks back as the euro fighters left the coast.

Best place I have been was in the Welsh valleys where we watched 2 fighter jets flying low altitude through the valley we were pretty much eye to eye with the pilots I think they were tornados

Neither had I - until 2 in quick succession over Leeds at 10.00pm. Oooooh - and have some people got their knickers in a twist. :hyper:

"How dare the RAF send fighters over town like that - it's scared my dogs!" Duuuuuuh!
You didn't see the transport jets then? Unknown & No Signal on Flightradar

I remember walking in Torridon (north west scotland) some years back. I was on the summit ridge, maybe 3000' and looked down i the valley to see a large eagle flying along. Mmm, he's flying petry quickly - cripes it's a Tornado jet. I was so far above him that the jet looked like a large bird. To see a Tornado from above whilst out for a walk is quite something

Going to airshows in the 70's yep heard them, the real problem was that the F104's from Germany that were meant to come and do them didn't arrive.

Yup! It wasn't Tornadoes back 40 years ago, but we used to see the RAF from above in the hills above Strathdon.

On a wee diversion - I also used to see the internal Yemenia flights from above. Wee planes, threading their way through the valleys between 8000 foot mountains. Apparently, wise passengers would bring an umbrella - the planes were old and rickety ..... and leaked.

OT....

Can never think of teh F104 without thinking of Rob Calvert

'tis on YouTube etc - an interesting album

(The F104 Starfighter was known as the Widow Maker because of the high rate of loss, The German Air Force lost 35% of its fleet, and the Canadians 46%. These were incredibly high, and to date unmatched for any other aircraft)

Cunobelin beat me to it but they were probably doing their lawn dart impersonation en route.

The Luftwaffe actually wanted the Lightning but the American pressurised them into buying the inferior F104. Lockheed were later accused of giving a $10m bribe to a German politician.

That's the place an amazing place to go and sit for an hour of so and see an aircraft at full operational speed flying near enough level with yourself.

Need to get back up there one day bit of a jaunt now I have moved to the other side of he country.

Aaah the Mach Loop.

I loved growing up in N Wales. Hours spent sitting on mountains looking down on all sorts of planes.

Jaguars, Phantoms, Tornados , Harriers.

Never saw a Lightning though . would have loved to as that was a fast fast jet
