Hi. I have recently signed up to bike to work scheme. Getting my road bike next week. I need to buy clothing but it just seems a minefield. I want to cycle a lot on a weekend so want some decent gear but reasonably priced. I quite like bianchi. It looks really cool. Is this good brand ? Can anyone recommend good brands and websites? Any info really appreciated as i am lost. Thanks John

Fit a comfy saddle (and it probably won't be one that calls itself "comfort") and wear whatever you would for walking far fairly quickly... but this is heresy from the 1980s and I do actually wear a muddy fox long sleeve jersey in summer because it's really thin but still enough to keep the sun off.

I have a mixed collection of summer and winter cycling gear all purchased on Ebay at rock bottom prices, mostly muddy fox. I also got a pair of Shimano spd shoes brand new, boxed for £18.99, rrp is in the region is 65gbp. There are some good bargains to be had on ebay if you shop around.

Depends on your budget. If you're poor like the rest of us, and want to get kitted out fairly quickly, dhb from Wiggle is good. And Aldi have kit in twice a year (brilliant base layers). Then you have your mid range brands like Gore and Altura, which are great quality, and I like Corinne Dennis. Then you go up another level to Assos and then the Armani of cycle clothing.... Rapha!

+1 for aldi gear good quality for the money . I brought winter kit in September rode every weekend through the winter in all weathers no problems still in goob nick . just bought summer stuff including shorts so far very happy . You don't need to buy brands it makes you no quicker .

As long as I breathe, I attack.
Only issue i have with aldi is the sizing, more small kit please !, and the spd shoes tend to crack across the sole plate from my awesome power

I bought a few things from wiggle and also sportsdirect. When they have a sale on, you can get decent stuff for dirt cheap prices. Got two muddyfox kits there for about £15.00 shorts and top, sondico base layers for £8.50 apiece, and not polyester ones. Of course, the altura and gore tex pricey stuff you can get in any specialised shop like Evans or Halfords, but I have always been of the opinion that for the price of one "strong brand" piece of equipment I can get three of other lesser brands, even if they are not that long lasting you can make 'em last longer by rotating them. Same thing with all my running gear and so on.

I buy stuff in sales but prefer mid-price stuff like Altura over things like Sports Direct's Muddy Fox, which I found to be of poor quality - to be expected given the price I guess.

Halfords often do some good sale stuff - I got a Gore Windstopper for about £79 which I saw still full price in Cycle Surgery yesterday for about £150.

Just recently bought hubby some Dhb shorts and he loves them, great price too and he says they are so comfy on his ride. Good quality too

Ask in the bike shop you get your bike from . It may cost a few quid more but for your first bit of kit you really don't want to be wearing rubbish as it will make your riding horrible . Your arse will hurt and you will be drenched in sweat .

Look to buy out of season, recently picked up two £100 bib knickers for £51. Lidl have some cycle stuff in on the 20th, do not like the shorts - too big but the jerseys are normally great for summer.
