Noisy Brakes?

Friend of mine was complaining of noisy brakes...
Someone told him it was crap on the rim, he spent ages cleaning them. Still noisy.
I explained about toe-ing in (without hearing the noise)

That didnt work either, so I said I'd take look:

Even as a newbie I can clearly see it's worn right down to the metal. No wonder it's squealing!

Worse still, if the pad is out of alignment it could shred the tyre.

My brakes are squeaking after putting new pads on with plenty of toe-in on them, any ideas how to fix that ? its making a heck of a racket !

I fitted new pads (V brakes) a few weeks ago. They squealed for a few miles but gradually quietened down and now don't make any noise at all.
