I do speak French having been brought up in Belgium.

seatpost is la tige de selle. Stem is la potence, not certain of quill stem but "potence traditionelle en alu (type annees 80)" will explain it quite well (traditional 1980s alloy stem).

I looked on Ebay France and a few for sale but mostly just called potence. The stem part that fits into the fork is called le plongeur.

What do you need for your bike. I have a box of bits that might help

ok..with your kind help I found this:

potence alu MAVIC
http://cgi.ebay.fr/potence-alu-MAVI...39:1|66:2|65:12|240:1318&_trksid=p3286.c0.m14

however I would likely need a longer stem of the same type...don't the french have big ones?

also seen these:
http://cgi.ebay.fr/cintre-course-al...39:1|66:2|65:12|240:1318&_trksid=p3911.c0.m14

which seem to fit the stem...and are in the right width (BIG) for me.

...i have no clue how to work ebay in french though...I'm surprised it isnt "C'est ferme" to be honest;)

IIRC, The French for rim is jante. Tim Krabbe wrote in his book, The Rider, that French must be a rich language that such a pretty word could be given this meaning.

BTFB, I found a quill stem in a box. It is 130mm long, appears to be 22m wide (it is British made) but has quite a short reach. It was on a trad UK road bike from the 80's, and then a Saracen Skyline (similar to Galaxy). The handlebar diameter it will suit is hard to measure perfectly but about 25mm....

I can post it if you think it will be right.

if you send me yr email address I can send a photo
