Shimano CX70 brakes. Changed wheels recently to rims that have a wear indicator groove on them.

Found my brakes were sticking. Turned out there was a ridge on the block that was sticking in the groove. Shame to dispose of the blocks as there's plenty of wear otherwise, but no choice really.

I don't think there's room to position the blocks either side of the groove.

Is this a common problem?

personally i'd get a bit of abrasive paper and take the high groove off the brake block every now and again.

I bought a pair of rims with the concentric groove wear indicator once. Never again. I got fed up with the brake pads sticking to the rim.
