As Yenrod says, the same papers that are today giving him the halo treatment, treated him disgracefully when he was England manager, and, arguably, drove him out of the job.

How many managers have had so much success in three countries? Mourinho runs him close, but I can't think of another.

The famous photo of him during the World Cup looking glum that used to castigate him for being clueless and having no idea how to proceed was apparently just a snapshot of him listening to his personal stereo. Sade I think.

As one who knows not one end of a football bat from another, I did encounter Mr Robson a couple of times many years ago when I worked on Wearside. Believe it or not he was a regular in our village chippy. He always had a bit of friendly banter with the shop staff and customers. There seemed no edge to him.
