Had to take one of my dogs to the vets on Friday last week as she was scratching a lot and chewing at herself, the vet diagnosed Sarcoptic mange (fox mange). Apparently it's a mite carried by wild fox that can transfer via grass to dogs, so one injection, some drops and a course of tablets and £51 lighter in the wallet and I have a rather more settled dog though she is somewhat sulky.
As for the fox with mange, we have seen it fairly regularly and have contacted the national fox welfare society http://www.nfws.org.uk/mange/free-mange-treatment.htm with a view to treating the fox itself.

Thanks for posting this, one to look out for with my hounds now a couple of local foxes have found our (fox proofed) chicken coop and taken to quite blatantly sitting in the garden watching it.

Good job cunning as a fox actually means pretty thick and unimaginative.

Can this mite be passed on to cats? One of my cats has been scratching excessively and pulling chunks of fur out of his coat. He is also losing weight. The vet thinks it is just an extreme allergy to fleas.
