(Slick) Tyre advice on a BSA Westcoast

In this thread I created http://www.cyclechat.net/threads/complete-overhaul-or-new-bike.154111/
One person recommends that I should buy some Schwalbe City Jet tyres to help me go that little faster.
Now, I was wondering what other similar tyres I could be looking at and which don't cost a bomb?

Also, what does lets say 1.95" stand for? And what is the difference between a higher, or lower number?
What is the highest and lowest numbers I could put on my bike? (Photo in first link).

The 1.95" is the width of the tyre and is about standard for an MTB. The price at Halfrauds seems about right/pretty cheap just don't ask for their fitting option. Maxxis are a good tyre but then so are the Schwalbe and they are also a "slick" so I'd stick with the Schwalbe and make sure they are inflated to the Max Rated Pressure ( printed on the sidewall of the tyre ) and yes at that price I'd buy em.

Ha I wouldn't even use their fitting option. If I get asked that, I'll ask "do you think I don't know how to do a simple job?" lol
