Sunday last was the annual London To Brighton Veterans car rally.
Lewisham Cyclists organised a ride to follow the cars down to Brighton.
20 peeps linked up to ride the route ending up on the beach eating fish & chips and supping beer in the November sunshine.

Here's a link to some pics (with aforementioned fat git)

A brilliant day following and overtaking the various (pre 1905) jalopies.
Seemed a lot of other cyclists as well as our good selves doing the same thing. Including a chap resplendent in period gear on a Penny Farthing.

A brilliant day, so put a note in your diary for next years event.

What a great day for a ride. How fast do those cars go ?

(I now have that harmonica music from "geneveive" stuck in my head)

Here's a link to the L2B Rally website, which shows the cars that raced.

As to speed, a mix really, some not much faster then 5 or 6mph, some of the more powerful ones obviously a lot faster. (but I think the rules state not more then 20mph) I think the slowest was that coal fired charabang complete with stoker. Of course there were a fair few conking out along the way, especially when climbing the hills.

Some of the cars were absolutely beautiful pieces of machinery. Some worth steering clear of, what with all those flywheels, chains, pistons, steam and hot oil clanking away.

They don't make things with real character any more, the drive for cheap functionality has pushed art out of the equation. Compare a steam train to a modern train or a new building to a classic one. It's very sad.
