The files you created will remain where there are (normally in 'My Documents'), whether you uninstall Office Xp or not.
I would uninstall the older version and then install the newer. It shouldn't matter which way round you do it, but doing it in that order minimises the risks somewhat.
As for 'cack handed technoidiot' - we all started somewhere and all of us are still learning.
