From what I've seen, fans have been going nuts by the roadside for the last 30 years. I can't recall anything terrible happening, though I suppose that depends on your definition of the word.

It wasn't me who rang the alarm bell, it was the organisers of Le Tour. It takes a lot of time, effort and money to construct a co-ordinated advertising campaign involving all the top European riders to try to engage the whole cycling world with evident concerns at high level in the run-up to the Tour. The Blazer Brigade have got the wind up. I expect a flurry of the adverts on TV now before the off, that is good but I just feel they are overlooking the obvious. They have probably consulted police crowd control specialists, PR gurus and advertising specialists. I don't know how they came up with the present campaign but I somehow doubt their starting point was a firm grasp of the underlying demographics of a Tour mountain top crowd and what makes them tick.

I was wrestling with the problem of coming up with a better word for the category 2 deviant ie. Narcissistic half naked Muppets when I saw your suggestion. You are quite right, no point in the police arresting them and just giving them a cautionary beating - education is the key, the cops should just catch them and plonk your book in their hands.

Then it hit me - Muppets in Thongs are Plonkers!

Trouble is, it could work out quite expensive on a finish like Alpe d'Huez and we'd need it in French, Dutch, Italian, Spanish etc. Good idea but probably not practical but thanks again I would never have thought of the word Plonker if it hadn't been for you.

I overheard a conversation between some of the Sun readers at work last weekend and when this thread came up the subject just seemed to fit perfectly.
