I have just seen this guy on BBC breakfast. He has just cycled the whole of the Tour De France on a chopper bike for help for heroes! Thought he deserved a mention on here! http://www.bmycharity.com/DavidSims
Yeah he said he had to alter the seat and gears as it was a childs bike. He alternated between two choppers depending on cycling on flat or climbing. Still an acheivement though!
He and the bike were featured on BBC Breakfast this morning. I am sure he would have had to modify the gearing, but I was also interested to see that he put a road bike saddle on it and a long seatpost. He also had mountain bike-type SPD pedals.
I am not, in any way, trying to disparage his achievement. Just interested in what needed to be done to make a short-range bike suitable for long distance riding. Perhaps suitable is the wrong word there!
Dave cycles for my club HMCC and he's tough as nails, trust me this achievement was about 10x as tough as it sounds, he had an achilles injury midway through and still did the Alps.
