I have a problem with Word documents being emailed to me by a friend who is running windows Vista. I'm running XP & any word documents that i receive are unable to be opened/recognised. Anyone else had this problem & found a solution ?
TIA

It's probably more likely to be the versions of Word you are both using.

If one of you is using Office 2007 and the other has an older version, the one with 2007 will need to install the Office Compatibility pack (download from MS Office site).

Hope this helps.

Cheers,
Shaun

Yes, I'd have thought it'd be Office 2007 on Vista and 2003 on your XP. After fiddling they aren't completely incompatible, you can eve run 2007 on XP.

You sure they are not just running the basic home package on vista which whilst looks like word is not ?

Install Open Office.

It's open source software, free to download and use, and reads ALL MS Windows formats with no problem!

Thanks for the help guys, but still no nearer.
I've downloaded the Office Compatibility pack & installed, but that didn't work.
The files are *.wps ;)
i already have open office installed & that cant open the files either

The compatibility pack would have let you open it if it were an Office 2007 .docx file

.wps however means it is a MS Works word processor file

See microsoft's artcile on how to read or open these in Word
