PRESS RELEASE

FOR RELEASE FROM 20/8/09

The Pedalling Pirates: Coast to coast by pedalo

Brighton 20/8/09.

At the end of the summer Six intrepid privateers will be making their second crossing of England by pedal boat. Their route will begin in Leicester where (given favourable winds) they will travel down the Grand Union Canal, along the Oxford canal before joining the Thames for the final stretch to London. Along the way they will be plundering booty for the fine folk at Camda (The Cambridge Mongolian Development appeal www.camda.org.uk), an excellent small charity who support Mongolian herders in continuing their traditional, nomadic lifestyle.

The trip will begin on the 22nd of August and is expected to take around two weeks to travel over 200 miles. Taking part will be Kit(25), Hannah(22) and Matthew Johnson(28), Matthew Tolliday(25), Peter Stewart(24) and Andrew Tollida (24). They will be travelling in two pedal boats (pedaloes) kindly supplied by the cycling charity Cycle Magic, along with a rubber dinghy to carry supplies.

We would like to give special mention to the wonderful people at Cycle Magic (www.cyclemagic.org.uk) who are very kindly lending us the two pedal boats. They're a not for profit limited company based in Leicester who do lots of cycling promotion make and provide bikes for people with disabilities.

This will be the second time the group have completed such a trip. Their first successful expedition was in 2005 between Bristol and London. When interviewed Hannah Johnson said of the first trip: 'It was hard work but definitely worth it. We met some great people (including Paul Daniels and Debbie Mcgee) and had loads of fun whilst managing to raise a lot of money for Wateraid.' However, the first voyage wasn't without it's challenges. Two crew members fell ill during the trip and the crew had to contend with Britain's changeable weather and a crocodile that followed them the whole way!

If you would like photographs from the first trip then feel free to ask.

The Pedalling Pirates are aiming to raise over £1500 to beat their fund-raising total from 2005. They are keen to hear from businesses and individuals who might be able to assist them on their voyage by donating lightweight camping/cooking equipment and above all BOOTY! e-mail at munilooney@gmail.com

Avast!

Sounds fun!

Although, I'm slightly bewildered by how Leicester to London can be described as Coast to Coast?

Anyway, good luck to them....
