Morally, socially and from a public safety perspective a lifetime ban is highly desirable. Unfortunately, the courts buy into the sad guff that a lifetime ban would unreasonably affect dependents etc while giving no corresponding level of countenance to the dependents of those who've been killed.

Life bans are already on the statute book and being utilised - about 6 per year are imposed by the courts.

I think there's a typo in there, it's a lot more than that.

You're right. It's about 130. Year, of which an average of 6 are bans imposed for causing death or serious injury. Most lifetime bans (over half) are for persistent drink driving and there are about twice as many lifetime bans given for nicking cars than for killing people... which shows there's something twisted about our priorities.
Errr... User, old chap, are you feeling all right tonight?

DVLA doesn't exactly have a sparkling record when it comes to IT systems. To expect it to mesh with the criminal justice system and the prison service is distinctly optimistic.

Having been banned im all in favour of the ban starting on release date.
being banned is a real ball ache and does make normal rational people who obey the law think and learn their lesson.
People that dont care wont give a toss being banned as they will have the who cares mentality and simply play the odds which are quite good if you drive a car thats legal.
