I've just been reading a very interesting thread on a US forum about the Furnace Creek 508 long distance race. Post 114 and its sequels are one of the most gripping accounts of a ride I've ever read. Well worth a look.

Yeah, that makes every ride I have ever done seem pretty easy really. And a superb ride report (still ongoing...).

Having been through Death Valley, it's certainly not for the faint hearted if you are cycling (114degs which was a tad chilly compared to usual temps recorded there). That is serious stuff indeed.
