Hi everyone,

Apologies in advance for the long post.. I've just signed up to the forum for some advice, after reading a fair few "what bike" threads!

I've currently got a Specialised Hardrock MTB, which I bought around 5 years ago. I'd not had a bike for about 5 years before that, when I used to do some mountain biking on a pretty terrible MTB I bought from Halfords. The Specialized felt brilliant for 300 quid, and I've used it fairly regularly since. However, I've found I mostly ride it on the road, and began to use it for the 5 mile commute to work. For commuting, I changed the awful saddle to a Charge Spoon, put SPD pedals on, and fitted Continental Gatorskin tyres, which are almost like a road tyre, and make it a hell of a lot faster. However, it's insanely heavy with pointless (for the commute) front suspension, and anything over about 25 miles is pretty uncomfortable.

So, I'm looking at getting a road bike on cycle to work, for around 800 pounds, but I'd go up to a grand if it was really worth it, if perhaps I could get something good discounted to under a grand. Saying that, I'm guessing that most places will be reluctant to do a discount if you're paying with C2W vouchers?

I'd be looking to do the commute on it in good weather; if the weather is bad then I'd either just be lazy and take the car, or use the Specialized as it'll take mudguards. I dont need to carry much, so a rucksack is fine, no need for panniers etc. I'd also like to be able to do longer rides, perhaps up to 50 miles, and having not had a road bike before I'm fancying something slightly more comfortable than an out-and-out race bike. I also suffer sometimes with shoulder pain, so that's another consideration with ergonomics! I'm not looking to compete or anything, but that all depends if I get seriously hooked or not!

Initially, I was all set on a Boardman Comp, which is SRAM Apex, in the nice white paint job, for 800 notes. However as I understand it, Halfords won't let you test ride bikes, so it seems a gamble!

Since then I've been told that other shops can take the Halfords vouchers, which opens things up a lot.

I've seen the Trek 1.2 at 725 pounds, but this is with Sora components, which I'm told aren't all that great... Otherwise I'm drawn to the Cannondale Synapse Tiagra, which I've seen at 850 pounds, which seems a good deal. The Specialized Allez and Secteur don't seem to be as well equipped for the cash.

I'm off work on Monday, so I'll be off looking to test ride a few then, so any opinions on the above or any other brands would be great, the only constraint being that I can buy from a shop that'll take the C2W vouchers!

Cheers,

Chris

do you need to spend 1k on a 5 mile commuting bike? Seems like overkill to me.

Surely something like the Specialized Allez for £450 would be fine for this kind of riding?

looks like you've already been sucked in by all the clever marketing

Where are you based? If around London, there are a few places which (used to) take Halfords vouchers - I used mine at Pearson's in Sutton, Surrey (fab LBS, sell Specialized and Trek plus some other road bike makes and they are good with test rides). On Your Bike (London Bridge, also in Birmingham) and also Condor (Grays Inn Road) used to take them. This was around 15 months ago, the rules have changed, so retailers may too, call up.

How much is your C2W voucher for (or have you not yet committed) - as I understand it, you can only spend up to the value of the voucher, cannot add more (e.g. get a grand bike by adding £200 to an £800 voucher). You can use the left over for safety equipement, lights, helmet, hi-viz (although most shops are fairly flexible on this, I added a bottle cage  )

Tundargumski... yeah, I might have been sucked in a bit! The idea behind getting the bike though, is more for commuting in good weather, and longer rides for fitness, so it won't just be doing the five miles, and I'd rather not find later on that I want to upgrade. 800 on C2W works out at 600 in contributions, so I don't think that's a crazy amount really.

Vickster... I've not committed to a value yet, but will once I make a decision on a bike. I already have all the other kit on the MTB though, so I'll swap it over.. I reckon I'll just need a bottle cage and cycle computer.

I'm based in Birmingham, by the way. I believe Leisure Lakes in Wolverhampton take the vouchers, so I'll give them and On Your Bike a call on Monday.

Comfort and fit are important, kit and specifications much less so. Very much less. Which is why I'd never recommend a Boardman as they don't allow test rides.

The Secteur might be less well equipped but the Sport model is £600-ish if you can still find a 2010 & that might be all that you need / want, for instance.

Don't buy without a long test ride - you shouldn't have a problem borrowing a bike to do the equivalent of your commute - and walk away from any shop which doesn't allow it. They don't deserve your money.

Try different suitable bikes then buy the one that works best for you.

I'd keep the commuter bike cheap and simple (it might get stolen anyway) and if you find that you love cycling, drop 2K next year on a full carbon and have two bikes!

Welcome !

If you have halfords vouchers i am surprised no one has mentioned the vituosso, cracking bike for commuting as you have room for rack, guards and well specced for the price.
Mine is currently my best bike, soon to be relegated to commuting duties when i get a boardman on C2W.

Used the virtuosso on a club run and it certainly was not left behind the "better" bikes and it is doing a sportive tomorrow.

+1 keep the bling for the weekend , i am currently using a 2nd hand ebay carrera TDF as a commuter and if somone is going to nick a bike at work do you think they will go for the older bike with 2 d locks or the full carbon machine with a cheap cable lock ? ....

The bike will be left inside a police station, so it should be safe... plus it'll be next to a load of Boardmans, and some pretty nice carbon bikes, so it won't stand out too much... except for being one of only a few that aren't black!

I popped into On Your Bike this afternoon, and test rode the Cannondale Synapse Sora (as they didnt have the Tiagra model in stock) and the Trek 1.5. The Trek felt a bit twitchy, and while it was comfortable enough on the test ride, I can imagine it might not be over longer distances. It does, however, look very nice in its matt paint scheme! The Cannondale felt more stable, possibly as I was sat a little more upright, and there seemed to be less vibration from the road. I only rode each for a short time, but if I decide on one I'll pop back for a longer ride before I commit. The Tiagra kit is nicer than the Sora though, so that's made my mind up there, really.

I'm planning to try Leisure Lakes on Monday, and see what they've got in, and maybe try out a Specialized. Does anyone know of any other good shops in the Birmingham area that take the Halfords vouchers?

If it will sit alongside some boardmans at work, see if you can blag one of them for a test ride to see if they fit as Halfords don't allow test rides. I
If you do fit a boardman then it would be a no brainer.

Remember they come in a lot of sizes !!

I am looking at this if i can ....

http://www.boardmanb.../road_comp.html

look in the geometry tab for sizes,

small = a 53/54 seat tube( if the top tube were flat)
med= 56
large = 58 i guess

Its more the top tube length you have to consider once you have a bike that fits your leg length, i have tried a 56 and i can ride it ok but the reach is way to long for me even with a shortened stem.

I bought a 2010 Boardman Team Carbon 2 months ago on the C2W for £999 - Awesome bike!

The trouble is, I don't think there are many (if any,) left and the 2011 model is £1,299. The 2011 'Team' is available for £999.

Don't be put off by Halford either. If you are at all concerned about the build, buy the bike boxed and build it yourself or get a LBS to build and size it for you!

Brilliant bikes for the money IMHO!

Nufab,
I am on the verge of a new bike myself see 'crunch time' thread. My choice is between two Cannondales and like your good self i think i am going to choose the Synapse but the 105 version. Bit more expensive but at half price on the cycle scheme it's not too bad. CAAD8 105 is my other possibility.
