Today I checked my card statement to find a strange payment for £49 to 'AMZ*Prime Club ' which meant nothing to me.

When I googled it, one hit was this complaint from the USA in respect of Amazon.com (not the UK branch).

However, it seems that Amazon UK are using the same tactic of implicitly enrolling purchasers in this 'club' under a 'free trial' and after a month, automatically debitting their cards without notice. I have not bought anything under the 'scheme' and today contacted Amazon accounts to ask them to cancel the membership.

Your request to cancel your Amazon Prime membership has been sent to our Customer Service department. Please allow 24 to 48 hours for processing.

On checking emails from Amazon I can find none with any reference to this 'club' or my enrolment. Only my card statement shows that they have taken £49 from me.

I am very annoyed by the way Amazon have apparently tricked me and my confidence in the outfit has been considerably reduced.

Has anyone else been taken in by this practice?

Worth logging into Amazon and checking that you haven't been signed up for Prime. I've just done it and I'm in the clear, but thanks for the heads up asterix.

Dave.

Amazon are a scamming, parasitic bunch of crooks. They are loathed by publishers and authors alike. Even if they have no contract with a publisher to supply books, they'll still list a book and take your order, thus tying up the market. A friend of mine who is in small-scale, specialised publishing (Georgian-English dictionaries, that sort of thing) is having huge issues with them as they apparently have no interest in actually sending books to people, but will take their orders.

Slightly OT - I don't find their helpdesk very helpfull. I created an acount several years ago then forgot it so I created a new one, with the same email address. (I think I'd done this about 3 or 4 times ;)). After I placed a recent order (well 6 months ago or more), I logged in to check my account but I must have done so with an old password  and didn't see my order . After a while I eventually got somebody at their end who knew their system and asked them to merge the accounts, they couldn't .

I've just checked too, not signed up to prime so that's ok. I also deleted all my payment methods just in case too. I think I will do that each time I use Amazon in future.

How would that have helped you? You have the memory of a goldfish and would just have forgotten about the new 'merged' a/c!!! ;)
