Any tips for replacing non-aero hoods?

I've managed to find some replacement hoods for my Modolo America levers (non-STi/Ergo) at a reasonable price (even if they do look more orange than tan).

I've had a go at fitting them by removing the cables and slipping them on from the front, over the levers.

However, they are tight and I really don't want to tear them: any suggestions as to how I might get them more easily?

Thanks & regards.

Lube them up, silicone lube works best, you can get it in an aerosol can commonly called "fastslip" (or a few other brand names) for a few quid at a plumbers merchant which is a bit thinner than the stuff in a tub, it's less messy to use as well than a tub of the Hepworth lube.

Screwfix are pricey though.
