While cycling at the weekend I came across these 'ramps' which had been placed in a local cycle track:

On enquiring at the council as to who put them there and why, I have today received the following reply:

Dear Mr ******,

Thank you for your email regarding the ramps that have been installed at Maxims Casino. I can confirm that the

ramps are temporary and have been provided to allow cyclists to divert around the works which are ongoing to construct a

new zebra crossing in this location. The ramps will be removed within the next two weeks when the crossing is completed,

but we would request that all cyclists, cycle through this area with due care and attention until the work is completed.

Kind Regards

Personally I wouldn't want to try using them, to my eyes it would be safer to just hop or bump up the kerb.

Thoughts?

I'd rather use the ramps than bump up the kerb - and I don't know how to hop...

Didn't you ask them to move the lamp post out of the cycle lane at the same time. Mind you, the Zebra Crossing will add a couple more poles and peds standing about in the cycle lane. A light controlled crossing would be a better idea.

LOL at the cycle stands outside the casino. Are they for the punters who have lost all their money in there ?

They're temporary so you cannot expect a top notch job - just be happy that they tried.

As for riding over it - if you feel you cannot, then you probably don't want to ride a bike on our roads. Shouldn't be any problem even on skinny road wheels - obviously take care.

Those are utter garbage. They shouldn't have bothered.

I'd rather that than nothing

I can get the road bike up that by slowing down a bit and doing a left-right turn onto the ramp to hit it at about 45 degrees and my bike will happily go up it.

there is little chance of maintaining a similar speed and getting the bike up the kerb in a controlled manner without the ramp, I'd end up taking up a lot of pavement to then swing round and continue onwards.

not the best ramps, but as they said, they're only intended for two weeks use!

If they're only a temporary measure then there's nowt really wrong with them apart from maybe the loose stone lying around. They do the job for which they're intended and will be gone in a couple of weeks.
