Best brake at the back?

I ended up riding with a group of riders for a few miles today, one of them noticed my front disc & said to me that you should have your best brake on the back not the front. This confuses me as it's much easier to lock up the back wheel. Am I missing something or has that guy got it the wrong way round?

if off roading and you only have one disk, i would put it at the front.

He's wrong. A more powerful rear brake is pretty pointless for the reason you mentioned. Just look at Campag groupsets - the rear brake is often single pivot because a dual pivot isn't necessary and weighs more.

The question that needs answering is....

Why are there two fecking enormous rotors on the front and a tiddly little one on the rear?

On the road, it's the front brake that does all the work. Off road, favour the back to control the bike
