Brake blocks; buy whole or buy shoe + refills?

I just bought a replacement V-Brake block (Clarks triple compound) from CRC, while I was there I noticed the empty shoes and refills available. Does anyone use these instead of buying whole blocks all the time?

I suppose it works out cheaper in the long run?

I usually just replace the pads. There's been a couple of occasions when I've needed to replace the shoe too but very, very rarely.
