I had a look at my ultra torque cups. When I cleaned them up it seems the metal finish has flaked off slightly. Is this significant or can I get away without new cups?

Personally, I would replace as BB cups are not that expensive. It seems to be corroded and this will create friction and probably get worse.

They should be fine as they are- the bearings locate on the wider part of the shell and the axle runs through the rubber seal so the affected part doesn't come into play.

I'd keep the pair for winter use so you can still get a visit to the LBS in.

BTW - take a look at the bearings to check that water/muck hasn't seeped in there as the seals are not very good IMHO.

This is corrosion on the outside of the bearing race. Not a problem in itself. If the bearing runs smoothly then it's fine, if not then water has got in there too and it needs replacing. You can get replacement bearings, you don't need to change the cup unless you want to.
