My Canon 40D is coming up with the following message every time I press the shutter.

"Error 01. Communications between the camera and lens is faulty. Clean the lens contacts"

The lens is an EFS 17-85mm f/4-5.6 IS USM.

Both the camera body and lens are in mint condition.

Previously I could get the shutter to fire by switching off and back on, but not now. Removing the lens, the contacts are spotlessly clean as are the corresponding ones in the camera body.

Could the fault lie elsewhere? Anyone else had experience of such an error message and what if anything did they do to remedy the problem?

I could take it to Campkins in Cambridge but they stung me for £58 to tighten a camera mount on an older SLR.

Any suggestions gratefully recieved.

A known problem, according to this http://www.fixya.com/support/t1324932-err_01_communication_between_camera

there are a couple of workarounds on there though. Good luck!

Thanks AW.

I had thought the single battery might not offer sufficient power for the camera and EF lens, but that is really a design fault by Canon. Having to buy a battery grip which uses two batteries to power the camera and lens might be a solution but an expensive one at that. It also makes the camera considerably more bulky. It also might not actually solve the problem. There doesn't seem to be any other solution unless Canon have issued updated firmaware to solve the software glitch.
