Looking for a cheap road bike for a family member who is looking to get back into cycling. Newcastle area.

Needs to be a big size - he's over 6 foot so would need to be a 58 or 60.

Ideally hydro discs but he's not too fussy.

Absolute max budget is £1k but think he'd rather spend a fair bit less.

https://www.recyke.bike/ based in Newcastle and Jimmi from Cade Media is a trustee I believe.

For £1k you will get one heck of a bike used!

Suppose the advantage of discs it that they probably make for a better winter bike if he gets something else in due course.

A lot of the bikes he's found on Ebay/Gumtree have cable discs which I'd personally avoid.

Cable discs can be absolutely fine.

At worst you upgrade the caliper to TRP Spyres or similar and get very good braking. I've got hydro and cable disc brakes on my road bikes and I'm around 6'5 and about 115kg - they both stop me absolutely fine. My rim braked bike is fine as long as it's not raining, but the difference is quite noticeable when it does.

There's a "Pay what you can" bike sale at The Linskill Centre in North Shields this Saturday. Might be worth a look if you're in the area, I'm planning to on the off chance there's something I fancy. I suspect it'll mostly be kids bikes, but you never know.
