I was in halfords today buying some degreaser and they had on the shelf a disc kit for £25 consisting of the rotor and the calliper. My specialized crosstrail has the mount for the calliper, but obviously I would need the right ring that would mount to the wheel hub somehow to support the disk.

Is this easy to do? Or do you need new wheels? Or replace the hub?

You need a hub that will take the rotor, traditionally with 6 bolts, but now more common with a centre lockring. Also rotors come in 160mm, 180mm or 203mm diameter and it will depend on your mount points.

I would recommend new wheels and some rim tape. I got some good wilkinson wheels (700c/29er) with shimano deore 32 hole hubs recently from Parkers of Bolton with 6 bolt holes for a shimano rotor for £104. I use them to keep my winter commuter tyres on so that I can swap them in effortlessly.
