Just in case anyone is from the area and interested, there will be a Dr Bike and Met Police session at Kingston station tomorrow (Saturday 21st May) between 10:00am and 2:00pm. They were giving out leaflets last night and this morning.

Not so concerned about the Dr Bike bit, but will probably go along and get the Met Police to mark the bike. Anyone know what that involves?

apparently they put a number on your bike using some kind of super-duper non-invasive marking device. The Met's Top Bike Cop is on this forum, and he's suggested a marking session at the end of the Martlets FNRttC

if anybody is interested in 'Dr. Bike' the checklist can be found here.... http://fnrttc.blogspot.com/p/its-most-definitely-about-bike.html scroll down and click on the list to enlarge it

I remember back in the day when they used to use metal letter ''punches" and a bloody great hammer to put your postcode on the BB.
Ouch!

It has changed since the hammer and chisel postcode in bb. They use a uv pen to mark some digits near the bb and put s few stickers on to deter theft.
There are regular places in central London where the police do it. I will post more info on that when I'm not using my phone.

Got the Brommie done at Kingston this morning.

It is some sort of acid etching thingamejig - they turn the bike over and put it underneath somewhere, wipe the patch clean and then paint some blue stuff and a serial type number sticker on there. Once that is done, it etches into the frame. At the moment it shows up like black computer text numbers, but apparently it fades to nothing in about 7 days and then is only visible with the UV light lamp that the police use on stolen goods. There is a visible sticker, which I have had put below the Queens Award and serial number stickers on the Brompton.

They were doing a roaring trade, as they set up outside the station right by the double segregated bike lane, which goes up the Richmond Road and past Evans and the Specialised shop one way, and into the town centre the other way.

I've had my recumbent security marked and entered onto their database. It's a brill service, even more so since it's free. Good on the Met cycle task force!

@BentMikey

Were you the recumbent that went into Evans as well? I had mine done, went and did some shopping, and then had 20 minutes to kill before the train back. Or did you have it done previously?

Ah, not me, I had mine done at Blackfriars a few weeks back.

OK - I'd never seen a recumbent before! Bright orange and black, was getting a few funny looks from passers by when it was upside down and getting etched. The chap riding it was rugby player build, wouldn't argue with him!
