Be aware that there are no 'wheel on' bike spaces available on the Paris to London trains from 23rd July to 13th August. There's some sort of embargo because of the Olympics.

Guess who managed, after some argy bargy, to get two bikes booked on a train travelling on 10th August

After seeing your big smile in that photo last week Vernon, I just can't imagine anyone refusing to transport you and your bike to .........well to just about anywhere.

We took two bikes on Eurostar by taking them to bits and wrapping them in plastic. They were then unusual pieces of luggage. No problem. There is a space for them, you just need to add a spacer for the front forks in case they are banged.
It went very well. Apart from carrying them over your shoulder on a thin strap that cuts like a knife. On the Paris Metro. In the rush hour. But we did get bikes to Orleans by train, so the operation was a success. We did the same thing on the return from Nantes to Lille and changed for Ebbsfleet. The bloody train didn't stop at Ebbsfleet, where our lift was waiting, so we had to carry the bikes around St Pancras and on to the High Speed Train back to Ebbsfleet....... But the system worked well. I believe a quick trip to a supermarket for a roll of clingfilm can turn any bike into a steel frame with attached parts in less than an hour.

I'm too lazy and my pal's too inept to partially strip the bikes. We'd rather spend the time drinking

ooh! The FNRttC returns on the 22nd!

You are lucky!

I'm amazed by the lack of co-ordination between Eurostar and the baggage handling company. It was a ball ache today trying to resolve a situation created by the baggage handling company who initially tried to wash their hands of any responsibility. I'm still chasing them for an email confirmation of the bike booking.

Eurostar should be flagging the absence of bike spaces on their services seeing as it's known, to them at least, well in advance.

I've just read your thread.

My outward journey from London was pain free. Every thing slotted togetter neatly to give a smooth rail journey from Leeds to Passau. I had to hang fire with the return because the booking window hadn't opened for the return journey from Budapest. By the time I'd resolved the Eurostar problem, the German telephone booking system had closed for the day and the East Coast trains web site that allows bikes to be booked on it had closed for maintenance.

It seems that the bike embargo is a recent restriction.

I've only just managed to extract an email confirmation from a booking made. In fact it's a bit like waiting for a bus. Nothing for ages then three turn up.
