Export Licensing for data

Any one got any experience with this?

I need to export data, not software, to China and will receive a similar format of data back. The data is encoded but not encrypted and will go over SMPP or HTTP-Post. So far as I can tell I don't need a license but asking the Gov department responsible for confirmation of this takes ages and I'll take a reasonable opinion on here just to get the ball rolling.

The Information Commissioner has published guidelines about sending personal data outside the EU, which may be relevant.

You need to make sure you are not affected by the Export Control Act http://www.opsi.gov.uk/si/si2008/uksi_20083231_en_1
So long as the data has no possible Military or law enforcement application, and its got no links to the USA you should be OK.
