I use Facebook but not a lot, just to keep in contact with a small number of people. I have just been watching a program on TV about FB and I hadn't realised just how intrusive this network is. I can understand being tracked whilst logged into Facebook but can/does Facebook track your online activities when not logged into Facebook?

Yes, people tried to tell them off for it but the just kept saying it wasn't in their jurisdiction.

I would never touch facebook with a bargepole. Same with google, apple and microsoft. I also host my own email because I got sick off all the companies scanning my emails to advertise to me.

A supplementary question if I may. Are the tracking cookies browser specific? So, if I live my life via Chrome, can I keep FB in the dark about my other activities by only visiting FB on Mozilla?

I closed my Facebook account down about six month back.

Though recently I clicked on a Facebook link and I got signed in :-( Next thing Im getting emails from facebook. Turns out my account was active

I've closed the account again. Says in 14 days the account will be removed if I don't sign in.

You account never gets removed as such. Just you cannot login. They still keep and sell your information.
Remember you are not it's customer, advertising companies are. You are there product, why would they delete that if they didn't have to by law?

Matt, you ever heard of "super cookies"? They respawn after deletion, they are almost irremovable.

No I've not. Pretty scary concept.

To be honest tho, I don't really care what tracks me doing what as I think that if you go on the Internet you're in a public domain anyway. If you don't want it out there, don't put it up there.

It is a trade off. People use there service and thats what they have to deal with. I choose not to. What I don't like is how they hide what they do. They should be 100% transparent with their collection and selling of data.

I have just blocked cookies from Facebook (I use Firefox). Now Facebook wont let me log in. I may well just leave it as it is and not bother with FB any longer.

I'm an occasional facebook user, I watched the program as well, It was fascinating to see how the advertising worked, though I bet they didn't show everything. I'm using Ubuntu and firefox, I have firefox set to delete cookies when I close firefox, I'm also running No Script, Ghostery and Better privacy. Normally the only E-Mails I get from Facebook are the ones informing me I've just logged on.
