Ok, finally getting around to my first cycle commute tomorrow.

Bike ready, kit all laid out.

Now just wondering how many things I've forgotten...

Wish me luck ;)

Go for it Twizit! Looks like a nice morning for it!

and indeed it was  Cold? yes, but not as cold as I normally get on the motorbike heading down the A3 :becool:

All went swimmingly well apart from one rear light bouncing off (Smarts appear to "bounce" well, but I need to find a better way of securing it to rear rack) and some bloke near Richmond Park telling me not to ride on the pavement when it was blatently signed as a cycle path

Other than that I'm now trying to figure out the best place to dry out a mound of sweaty kit  Not sure if it's the done thing to leave it in our one office shower room - time to go consult with the other office cyclists....

Thanks for the best wishes.

watch it, they'll turn you!!!! soon you will be one of them!!

oh no too late.!!:becool:

Well done Twizit, sorry I missed you OP and didnt wish you luck. The cyclepath thing is usual practice (for me too), so much so that I started to doubt myself and had to stop and check (I've even done the whole google streetview thing before just to put my mind at rest!)

what sort of time did you make, was it much slower than the motorbike?

How do you feel now....?

Cheers Jonny. Feeling great now. Nice and awake - although am used to early morning exercise in either gym or running.

Allowing for light falling off and random cycle path pedestrian took me just over an hour. Wasn't honking it knowing I've go to make it home later too, but reckon I should be able to do it in less than an hour without too much difficulty. Motorbike usually takes 40-45 mins depending on traffic - it's the lights that usually hold me up!

stunning weather this morning and wonderful to see everyone scraping ice off their car windows while i rode past.....thankfully the black ice did not get me,that would have cheered them up no end !
Glad you made it in one piece and enjoyed it.

I'll bet you were up with a lark too...On my first commute, I rode in hours earlier than I needed, I had no real idea how long it would take!!

That's a good run in (i'm guessing your commute is around the 12- 15 mile mark?...have you already mentioned the distance, sorry if you have).

I wouldn't "honk" it too much (I like that expression) if I were you, it will set an unrealistic expectation for the future and can have a detrimental effect on your motivation and moral if you are just too tired to keep it up.

Better to take it easy (with potential rest days on the motorbike) then you can build up to a record breaking spring/summer...trust me if you like it now, you'll LOVE commuting by cycle in the summer

My LBS sold me an extra bracket for a £ or two, which bolts to the rack on the rear (mine had holes there already) and accepts the clip of the Smart light. Be worth asking them, or someone here may have a link to the right thing.

ps...well done on starting commuting - especially this time of year when some are winding it down till spring.

I had the same problem with the Smart light attached to my saddle pack (which also bounced really well).

I attached a small black zip tie around the lower part of the clip and it's been solid ever since.

Well done on your commuting efforts....especially at this time of year.

Cheers you two.

Um, yup left home at 6.30am - but then I usually leave around then anyway for gym or run - can't stand trying to motivate myself to exercise post work! Will definitely be alternating cycle / train / motorbike for a while - my cycle legs are definitely not yet up to 30 miles x 5 days per week yet!

fh100 - I've got the original bracket for the Smart - but I've got a rear single post type rack that fits to my seat tube which has it's own clip at the back. This is what I used, but as it's not specifically for the Smart it allowed it to bounce out. Will experiement with the original bracket to see if I can fit it somewhere!

Cheers
