Hi all!

Does anyone have any opion on folding tyres vs well erm ... Non folding tyres?

I need some new ones for my 1980 holdsworth and would ( purely for fashions sake ) like some red ones. The only thing is I once had a tyre come out of it's rim. This freaked me out no end and I'm very waery of it happening again!!!

What are the forums thoughts on this?????

I'm on mavic 700 x 25 by the way!

Cheers

What is the internal width of the rim on your wheel?

Hmmm,
I don't know!
The tyres on there at the mo are 700x25 continentals but they are quite old and had a couple of small slices ( not deep but there non the less)
I'll have a look for dimentions in the morning and post again then!

Yes. On the wheel usually in small letters it will say the internal width of the rim. It will say something like 700x15. If it's something like that it'll take 23s fine, if it is something a lot larger then it would not likely work very well and 25 is presumably the largest advisable size.

Thanks for your help on this!!!
here's the deets on the hubs...

they are Mavic MA2 hubs on the label it says 622x13 - 6106

do you think i can get 700x23 tyres on these??
there seems to be more choice (of colours) in this size

also my other question.
is there a difference in quality / safety between folding and non folding tyres?
as i'm still a bit weary after my tyre came of my rim on my old bike!

cheers

Your MA2 rims (not hubs!) will be fine with 23c tyres. There shouldn't be any difference in safety between folding and non-folding (wire bead) tyres, though folding ones tend to be more expensive, so quality may be slightly improved.
The main difference is weight. Folding tyres are lighter, and as this is rotating weight at the outside of your wheels, this will be one of the best places to upgrade your gear in terms of improved ride feel and acceleration.

thanks guys!
i had 23c's on my old road bike and would rather have those on this one.
so, now we have that sorted!!!!
what brand do you guys recomend?
i commute in london and the roads are quite gritty / glass shards etc.

also on an aesthetic note, the bike is red with white tape and cables...
colour opinions anyone???

ps, sorry, i meant rims, they are on mavic 501 hubs!!!
