Hi,

Sorry if this is just me being thick but I need to get a new front mech for my road bike and this is it but what does 'braze on' mean ?

My size is 31.8 and currently its a clamp on front mech.

Shimano 5600 105 Front Derailleur, 'Braze-on' (???) Double, Black

Could I get away with a triple or a 5700 model (cheaper...) ???

Shimano 105 Front Mech Triple 10sp 5603

Thanks very much for all help in advance..

Braze on means it bolts to the frame without a collar clamp

The older I get, the faster I used to be ...

- but of course you can purchase braze-on adapters (clamps) seperately, so you can purchase a braze on front mech and adapter (appropriate diameter) and fit it to your frame. IIRC some of the top end mechs only come in the braze on flavour, as the (top-end expensive carbon) frames they are likely to be fitted to will probably have odd shaped and extra large diameter seat tubes

Makes sense, thanks for extra info. Have got a clamp type one as adapters of any sort sounds complicated and more to go wrong.

Also turns out that shimano 5600 and 5700 are the same specs according to their website...makes you wonder why they do that...
