Front wheel fell off

Cycling to work this morning and found myself face to face with a huge pothole. It was too late to swerve round it, so I tried to do a wheelie over it, but half way across the front wheel fell out of the forks, and of course I had nowhere to go but down Forks are a write off obviously, and I can't find the front wheel either, as it rolled off down the road and round a corner, and when I got there it was nowhere to be seen. Fortunately, since my last off on black ice I have taken to wearing full body armour, so apart from a few scuffs there was no harm done.

Does anyone know if I can sue the council over the pot hole?

To actually come off your QR must have been very loose, even then there's lawyers lips

I believe you can approach a council but I must admit I've never done it, I would blame my self first rather than pursuing a cash strapped council.

So, your case would be the council didn't warn you that you needed to put your wheel on properly ?
Defective cycling proficiency training in 1976 perhaps - they missed out the "bleedin' obvious" module presumably

You'll have a hard time with the council, as the crash was technically your lack of ability to check the front wheel is in securely. No1 safety issue. Do you never give the bike a quick bounce ?
No 2 The evidence rolled off down the road !!!

And if the council isn't aware of the pot hole, they have no way to know they need to fix it and I believe this makes it really hard to make any claims.

It wasn't the pot hole that caused the failure. If it hadn't been a pot hole it would have been something else. I think that councils are hard strapped enough trying to sort out the stuff that is their responsibility and that to try and get some money off them for this would be just a little bit cheeky really. We all know that councils could be doing a lot better but this sort of thing won't help. I hope you will reconsider asking them to reimburse you and put this one down to experience. Fortunately you were not hurt and nor was anyone else. In short though this one is down to you.
