gearing advice

I am currently struggling with the gearing on my 1990s dawes streetlife bike it has the older 6 speed freewheel with 14-28 tooth fitment. I find the jumps of 3 and 4 teeth between gears too much and am looking for a 13-22 or similar but cycle shop listings only give 14-24 or 28,I am beginning to think there is no alternative or am I wrong?

ebay is your friend for such things

alternatively ditch the wheel, and get one that will take a cassette instead, you might have to respace your drop-outs, to get it to fit.
