Gears, work fine on repair stand but not when ridden?

just a follow up to my post on gears at https://www.cyclechat.net/ i have sorted, well i thought i had, the gears on the wifes old mtb, all is well when it's on the repair stand, but when you ride the bike it doesn't go in to the small cog on the cassette - it does when it's on the stand, any ideas?

Slacken off the barrel adjuster by a 1/8th turn until it does drop in. Should be fine.

I don't know why but sometimes bikes of mine don't like going into the high gear (small cog) unless I'm going a certain speed whereas when they are on workstands everything seems fine.

gears behave slightly differently when under load (ie. riding) - the necessary adjustments should be minimal though if it workled well on the stand.

thanks people I will have a fiddle this evening (oh err), hopefully just a minor adjustment needed.....
