Well this was a first. The wife and me went away for the weekend.Friday to sunday, Hothorpe Hall, border of Leicester and Northants.Very nice no kids no teenagers, our two were at home being looked after by grandparents.
So after lunch sat two couples asked if we fancied geocaching,we were given a little talk about it then off we went.We went through villages phone boxes graveyards and fields. It was good fun but i don't think i'll take it up.But enjoyable afternoon out.

We used to do it when the kids were young, now though they'd rather be plugged into an Xbox or playstaion.

I now use my garmin etrex to log my rides instead of finding caches:smile:

I've been geocaching a couple of times with family, not recently though. Enjoyable enough, but not something I'd take up as a regular pastime - and as mentioned above - kids would rather sit in front of a screen of some sort...

I enjoy geocaching, often combine it with a bike ride. I've only found about 100 caches though, met a couple the other week that were in their 1000's. We use it as a way of seeing somewhere new, go to the cache and then home.

lol strange how hobbies combine..

We recently cycled the Tissington trail, picking up the caches on there along the way..
This last Saturday we took a lovely 4 hour stroll around Benton near the East Midlands airport.. We do them mainly for the walks but also for the different places it takes us.. This walk I went paddling in freezing cold water, climbed a tree and the mrs was down a ditch pulling plastic rats out of drain pipes..
I've done caches on Gibraltar, little islands off the coast of Carnac, France, top of Snowdon, and of course film pots at the bottom of fence posts..

My avatar is me on top of Winhill Pike looking over Ladybower.. That's my GPS on my geocaching.com lanyard around my neck..

It's not for everyone but its another of those things that if you do get into it, you can get addicted!

I own a couple of caches which seem to keep many people amused. I even once managed to move a Trackable from Leics to Sydney Harbour much to the delight of its junior owner. I hunt infrequently these days, mainly just pick up one in a location I've not been to before, including Ireland, Iceland and Oz.

Did you manage to find the film case in the end?

The last one was in a disused telephone box.A micro magnetic thing no bigger than a thumbnail.I missed ,so another of the party went inside. We were being watched by two locals.Who must have known the box was not in use.So eventually they got up the courage to ask us what we were doing.By this time i was on my phone looking at the latest footie scores.I replied geocaching, wot treasure hunting like, yep i replied. You four need to get a life came the reply back.I said i can tell you something even dafter i'm also a cyclist. That shut them up.i must say i enjoyed to time out and the company.

Were you tempted to push him off?

I used to do it a fair bit when it first became popular, about 2001/2002 ish, whilst I was a student... it was a good excuse not to go to the library basically! Got a fair bit involved in the community and had a couple of caches. For me, the appeal was less about finding the little box with the list of names, and more about being taken on a walk somewhere new. A decent cache would involve a pleasant walk, sometimes a little history in the description, and a mini challenge... although to be fair half the time I didn't care if I found the cache or not.

The appeal has waned for me. However, I did get me brother in law addicted. Along with his two young kids, their family have numbers of "finds" in figures of thousands. He's been on TV about it and everything.

I owned five caches at one time, I only have two now (one is one the front of my house).

I'm far from obsessive about it, but I do love knowing where loads of the really public caches are.

We started a travel bug when the wee one was born, I get a real kick out of seeing it on the move!
