Thinking of getting a dishwasher - never had one before.
I imagine they are one ginormous waste of energy. Am i right? Opinions?
Who's got a dishwasher, and thinks it's the best thing since sliced bread?
Thanks

The last gadget to go when the bomb goes off!

Allow me to explain: MY LIFE WOULD END IF YOU TOOK MY DISHWASHER OFF ME

Get an AAA rated one and it uses less detergent and less hot water than washing the same dishes in the sink.

They use (in our case) less water than hand washing (some are remarkably efficient) and the energy use depends on whether they are hot or cold fill and how your domestic water is heated. However, the convenience is immense.

We only got one 4 years ago when Mrs Norm's hand was broken in a car accident, we wouldn't think of going back now, though.

Oh, and the energy use is, IMO, one of those things that everyone talks about but is pretty small in the big picture of household expenses - the difference between a good one and a great one likely comes down to under 20p a week.

They may be a ginormous waste of energy, but I would not part with mine.

At one stage we were considering having two, because you always end up with a dishwasher full of clean dishes and a sink full of dirty ones. Two dishwashers mean that you can just move dishes from one to the other without having to put them away in between.

If you share a living space with one, get a quiet one. Look at the dB noise rating on the manufacturer's blurb. If you live in a hard water area, take their advice about additives. Get dishwasher proof cutlery.

They're also hygienic; I used to work in a residential home for adults with learning disabilities and using the dishwasher was compulsory!

I personaly rebuilt and re-plumbed half my kitchen to fit in a dishwasher someone gave us!

Buy one! It'll probably be your best investment!
As Slowmotion says, the noise rating is worth noting. I can't say I've seen a hot fill dishwasher (like washing machines, the energy rating/consumption is helped through cold fill). Many units now include an 'eco' wash where it washes at around 50 degrees rather than 65, making it cheaper to run.
Strangely you will begin to resent the fact that it doesn't put the clean dishes away after it has washed them!
If the only space I had was the kitchen sink, I'd rip that out and fill my kettle in the dishwasher!!
